#15 The fountain of poop, I mean, youth…

Several poop loving people have recently alerted me to this news article, suggesting that the elusive Fountain of Youth may flow brown.

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany reported the life extending properties of youthful poop. The pond dwelling Turquoise Kilifish (Nothobranchius furzeri) has but a brief time here on earth, dying after a few sweet, fishy months. Researchers wondered whether the gut microbes of younger fish may help their elders to live longer. To ask that question, they treated older fish with antibiotics and sterilized their tank water, before dumping the guts and poop of younger fish into the tank. After this ‘fecal microbiome transplant’ the older fish were reported to be livelier, and lived over 40% longer! Importantly, after the transplant, the microbiome profiles of the older fish were more closely matched to that seen in younger fish, suggesting that gut bacteria might be critically involved in the effect

Bottoms up!
